THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

East Coast Australia Road Trip

Your complete 14-day, stop-by-stop itinerary from the tropical north of Cairns to the iconic surf of Byron Bay and beyond.

Welcome to the definitive guide for the most iconic road trip in Australia. The journey along the East Coast is a rite of passage, packed with adventure, stunning beaches, ancient rainforests, and vibrant cities. Whether you're driving a campervan or hopping between luxury hotels, this route offers something for everyone.

Planning Your East Coast Drive

North vs South?

You can drive Cairns to Sydney (Southbound) or Sydney to Cairns (Northbound). Both are fantastic. This guide follows the Southbound route, starting in the tropics and heading towards the surf breaks of NSW. This is often preferred in Autumn (March-May) as you follow the warmth down.

How Long Do You Need?

  • 7 Days: Rush. Choose a section (e.g., Cairns to Airlie Beach OR Brisbane to Sydney).
  • 10 Days: Express. You can see the highlights but expect long driving days and minimal relaxation.
  • 14 Days: Ideal. This allows 2 nights in key stops like Cairns, Whitsundays, and Byron Bay.
  • 21+ Days: Luxury. See every hidden beach, national park, and small town without stress.

Car Hire & Transport

For maximum flexibility, hiring a campervan or car is essential. A campervan allows you to save on accommodation and wake up to ocean views. Companies like JUCY, Apollo, and Britz are popular. A standard 2WD car is sufficient as the entire route (The Bruce Highway & Pacific Highway) is sealed. Tip: One-way fees often apply, so factor this into your budget.

The Ultimate 14-Day Itinerary

This itinerary focuses on the Queensland leg from Cairns to Byron Bay, which contains the highest density of "bucket list" items like the Reef and Whitsundays. Extending to Sydney is easy—just keep driving south!

Day 1-2: Cairns & The Great Barrier Reef

Arrive in Cairns (CNS), the bustling gateway to Queensland's tropical north. The first day is all about acclimatizing to the humid, tropical air. Wander along the Cairns Esplanade, take a dip in the free saltwater Lagoon, and enjoy fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant.

On Day 2, embark on the quintessential Australian experience: a full-day trip to the Outer Great Barrier Reef. We recommend booking with established operators like Quicksilver or Reef Magic to ensure you reach the pristine outer reefs. Whether you choose to snorkel or dive, seeing the kaleidoscope of coral and marine life, including sea turtles and clownfish (Nemo!), is unforgettable.

Local Tip: For a quieter evening, drive 20 minutes north to Palm Cove for dinner under the paperbark trees.

Stay: Crystalbrook Riley, Cairns

Day 3: Port Douglas & Daintree Rainforest

Cairns to Port Douglas: 67 km, ~1 hour drive

Take the stunning Captain Cook Highway north. This winding coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Coral Sea meeting the rainforest. Your destination is Port Douglas, a sophisticated resort town. From here, venture into the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest continually surviving rainforest on Earth.

Take a crocodile-spotting cruise on the Daintree River, walk the elevated boardwalks at Mossman Gorge, and taste exotic fruit ice cream at the Daintree Ice Cream Company. The intersection of reef and rainforest here is a UNESCO World Heritage marvel.

Must Do: Visit the Rex Lookout on your drive up for the perfect Instagram shot of the coastline.

Stay: Peninsula Boutique Hotel, Port Douglas

Day 4: Mission Beach & Cassowaries

Port Douglas to Mission Beach: 200 km, ~2.5 hours

Head south past Cairns to the relaxed village of Mission Beach. This is one of the best places in Australia to spot the endangered Southern Cassowary in the wild. Keep your eyes peeled as you drive through the rainforest corridors.

Mission Beach is also famous for having the Great Barrier Reef just 40km offshore. It feels secluded and untouched compared to Cairns. If you're an adrenaline junkie, this is Australia's premier beach skydiving location, offering 15,000ft jumps with reef views.

Stay: Castaways Resort & Spa

Day 5-6: Airlie Beach & The Whitsundays

Mission Beach to Airlie Beach: 510 km, ~5.5 hours

It's a big driving day, passing through sugarcane fields and the town of Townsville. Your reward is Airlie Beach, the vibrant hub for the 74 Whitsunday Islands. This is backpacker central, but also offers high-end luxury.

On Day 6, take a boat tour (we love Ocean Rafting for fun or Cruise Whitsundays for comfort) to Whitehaven Beach. The 98% pure silica sand is blindingly white and never gets hot. Hike to the Hill Inlet Lookout for that iconic swirling sand-and-water view that graces every Australian travel brochure. Snorkel in the fringing reefs of Hook or Hayman Island.

Stay: Mirage Whitsundays

Day 7: Agnes Water & 1770

Airlie Beach to Agnes Water: 700 km, ~8 hours

Another long stretch of highway driving (The Bruce Highway). Start early! Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 mark the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. It's a chilled-out surf town vibe.

This is the furthest north you can reliably surf in Queensland without stingers or crocs being a major concern, making it a great place for a cheap surf lesson. Enjoy a spectacular sunset over the water at 1770—one of the few places on the east coast where you can see the sun set over the ocean (in the bay).

Stay: Sandcastles 1770 Motel & Resort

Day 8-9: Hervey Bay & K'gari (Fraser Island)

Agnes Water to Hervey Bay: 230 km, ~3 hours

Drive south to Hervey Bay, the whale-watching capital of Australia (best seen July-October). But the real draw here is K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island.

Park your 2WD car in Hervey Bay and join a 4WD day tour (or overnight tour) to K'gari. You'll drive along 75 Mile Beach (a literal highway), swim in the crystal-clear freshwater of Lake McKenzie, float down Eli Creek, and see the rusting Maheno Shipwreck. The ancient rainforests growing directly out of sand are a biological marvel.

Stay: Oaks Hervey Bay Resort

Day 10-11: Noosa & The Sunshine Coast

Hervey Bay to Noosa: 190 km, ~2.5 hours

Welcome to the Sunshine Coast. Noosa is the jewel in the crown—a blend of luxury, nature, and surf culture. Walk the coastal track in Noosa National Park to Hell's Gates; keep an eye on the eucalyptus trees for wild koalas and the ocean for dolphins.

Spend your time shopping on Hastings Street, kayaking the Noosa Everglades (one of only two everglades systems in the world), or simply relaxing on Main Beach. If you have time, visit the Glass House Mountains in the hinterland for incredible hiking.

Stay: Seahaven Noosa Beachfront Resort

Day 12: Brisbane

Noosa to Brisbane: 140 km, ~2 hours

Head south to Queensland's river city capital. Brisbane has transformed into a cool, cosmopolitan hub. Park the car and explore South Bank, home to Australia's only inner-city man-made beach, lush parklands, and major art galleries (GOMA).

Eat your way through the Howard Smith Wharves precinct under the Story Bridge. It's lively, scenic, and packed with excellent breweries and restaurants.

Stay: Emporium Hotel South Bank

Day 13-14: Byron Bay

Brisbane to Byron Bay: 165 km, ~2 hours

Cross the border into New South Wales to the iconic Byron Bay. Famous for its alternative lifestyle, excellent surf, and celebrity residents. The vibe here is unmatched.

Start your morning with the Cape Byron Lighthouse walk—the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Watch the sunrise, surf The Pass, or just soak up the atmosphere at a vegan cafe. It's the perfect place to unwind at the end of a long journey.

Note: If you are continuing to Sydney, allow another 2-3 days for stops in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, and Newcastle. This 14-day itinerary focuses on the tropical to sub-tropical leg.

Stay: Crystalbrook Byron

Continuing to Sydney?

If you are driving the full distance to Sydney, add these stops after Byron Bay:

  • Coffs Harbour (1-2 Nights): See the Big Banana and walk Muttonbird Island.
  • Port Macquarie (1 Night): Visit the Koala Hospital.
  • Newcastle/Hunter Valley (2 Nights): World-class wine region just 2 hours from Sydney.
