Cairns to Sydney Road Trip in 2 to 4 Weeks

A stop list and three ways to split the east coast drive.

The drive from Cairns to Sydney is 2,421 km if you go straight down the highway, according to Tourism Australia. Nobody does it that way. The coast is where the stops are, and the detours add up. This guide shows how to split the trip over two, three or four weeks, with a stop list you can trim.

Short version: two weeks is a fast drive with one night in most places. Three weeks lets you stay two nights at the main stops. Four weeks adds the islands and a few quieter towns.

North to south, or south to north?

Both work. Starting in Cairns puts the reef and rainforest first, while you are fresh. Starting in Sydney means you finish somewhere warm. One-way rental cars and campervans usually carry a one-way fee, so compare that when you choose direction.

When to go

Tropical Queensland has a wet season, roughly November to April, with heavy rain, flooding and the chance of tropical cyclones. The U.S. State Department and the Bureau of Meteorology both flag this period. Roads can close after heavy rain, so check QLDTraffic and Live Traffic NSW each morning. The drier months are easier in the north; the southern end is cooler then. Our best time guide covers it month by month.

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers are a risk in northern waters. Swim at patrolled beaches between the flags, use stinger nets where they are provided and follow local signs. Beachsafe lists patrolled beaches.

Nights are suggestions. For drive times between stops, use a mapping app on the day; roadworks and weather change them.

Two weeks: the fast version

Fourteen days covers the coast, but you will drive most days. Pick one island day (Whitsundays or K'gari, not both) and keep Sydney for after the trip. If that sounds rushed, our two-week east coast road trip shows a day-by-day version, and the 10-day itinerary flies between Sydney and Cairns instead.

Three weeks: the sensible version

This is the length most people find comfortable. You get two nights at Cairns, Port Douglas, Airlie Beach, Hervey Bay and Noosa, so you can do a full-day tour at each without packing up the next morning. Add Magnetic Island from Townsville and a night in the Hunter Valley or Port Stephens before Sydney.

Four weeks: room for the islands

With four weeks you can add an overnight sail in the Whitsundays, two or three days on K'gari, and slower stretches in northern New South Wales. You could also detour inland, for example to the Atherton Tablelands from Cairns.

K'gari (Fraser Island)

K'gari is sand-only, so you need a high-clearance 4WD, and Queensland Parks and Wildlife requires a vehicle access permit. Most visitors join a guided 4WD tour from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach instead. Check permit rules with Queensland Parks before you go.

Driving tips

What it costs

Fuel, one-way vehicle fees and island tours are the big items. Rather than guess, use the trip cost calculator (AUD) and price your own vehicle for your dates.
